On February 13, 2009, a Coalition delegation of Joan Meek, MD, Carol Brady, MS and Susan Taylor, RN, IBCLC met in Tallahassee with Florida's Surgeon General, Dr. Viamonte Ros to discuss how the Coalition could work at collaborate efforts with the State of Florida to promote breastfeeding.

Florida Breastfeeding Coalition has been AWARDED the
Business Case for Breastfeeding 2009 - 2010 Grant - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) has launched a major three year national initiative designed to improve worksite support for breastfeeding women. The initiative includes a resource kit, The Business Case for Breastfeeding, which focuses on encouraging employers to establish, maintain, and expand programs to enable their breastfeeding employees to continue breastfeeding their infants after they return to work. The initiative also includes a national training initiative designed to equip lactation educators and community partners with skills needed to effectively reach employers in their community.
The grant would includes:
Two-day training program provided by MCHB contracted staff from HCD International and Every Mother, Inc.
$10,000 in implementation funds to be used for conducting outreach with local businesses, providing additional local trainings if needed, and conducting other activities related to implementing The Business Case for Breastfeeding
Ongoing technical assistance for a full year from the time the State Breastfeeding Coalition is selected, and access to technical assistance resources until the end of the project
Access to The Business Case for Breastfeeding materials needed to complete their project outreach plans
As Funding Chair, Debbie Albert, RN, IBCLC, PhD., did a fantastic job completing the grant application on behalf of the coalition. (12-3-08)
We were not awarded the 2008 grant, but were encouraged
to try again next year. (1-15-09) The grant application was reapplied for on July 10, 2009 and awarded to the Coalition on August 7, 2009. Many thanks to Debbie Albert and all the supporting letters from FL Healthy Start, FL DOH, FL WIC, Florida Lactation Consultant Association and La Leche League of Florida and English Speaking Islands.
